The City of Canal Winchester has begun annual sidewalk inspections. In Canal Winchester, like most communities across the country, the property owner is responsible for the maintenance of the sidewalk abutting their properties. Beyond providing for the safety of pedestrians, Ohio law provides for this practice on the premise that the property owner gets the most benefit from the walk and it enhances one's property value.
In order to assist property owners in compliance with the sidewalk code, the Canal Winchester Council has established a sidewalk cost sharing program whereby the city will pay 50% of the reasonable and customary costs of the sidewalk repairs. With this program the city will perform the construction as part of our annual street repair program and upon completion of the work, develop a bill for the property owner's share of the improvements that can either be paid as a lump sum or assessed to the property taxes over a three-year period with a 1% administrative fee. The Sidewalk Grant Program also has a provision for further financial assistance for those who qualify.
